The airport is the main international gateway onto the island of Bali, Indonesia. The domestic and international terminal buildings are separated by the Festival Plaza. To transit between the buildings passengers walk beneath the covered walkway to access either terminal. The airport runway stretches along a narrow piece of land surrounded on both sides by water, which connects the Bukit Peninsula with Bali's mainland.

In 2017 over 20 million passengers (international and domestic) traveled through I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport compared with 19.985 million in 2016. The eruption of Mount Agung in late 2017 impacted overall visitor numbers anticipated in 2017 as the tourism and hospitality sectors were hit hard.
